Canada Day Celebrations at Urban Roots Garden Market!

Canada Day is a great time to celebrate our beautiful country by surrounding ourselves with some of its most iconic symbols: red and white plants!

Canada’s national colours are represented in nature by a variety of stunning flowers, fruits, and veggies. So why not show your Canadian pride by planting some patriotic blooms in your garden?

Here, we’ll give you some ideas on how to call on your creative side and combine gardening with Canada Day celebrations!

Edible Decorations

One great way to get started with decorating for your Canada Day celebrations is to consider planting some fruits or veggies! This is a great and sustainable way to combine a patriotic holiday with growing your own food.

A popular option for red fruits is strawberries! With their red fruit and white flowers, they have Canada Day written all over them. And who doesn’t love to nosh on a juicy strawberry straight from the garden? Luckily, these are super easy plants to grow, and will be ready for your Canada Day celebration. For best results, you’ll want to give your strawberry plants a reasonable amount of space from each other, and maybe even add a little mulch to the surrounding area.

For red veggies, you might want to consider tomatoes. Although tomatoes don’t bear fruit until later in the summer, once these begin to ripen, they’ll brighten your garden with their red glow. With so many different varieties to choose from, you can surround your patio with an assortment of scarlet orbs. Luckily, growing tomatoes is easy and rewarding. Just make sure to get your tomatoes in well-drained soil, and water them regularly. Another important tomato-growing tip is to place them in full sun – tomatoes love to get a suntan.

With all of these delicious plants blooming in your garden, you’ll be able to add an element of patriotism to your fruit and veggie yield.

Festive Flowers Galore

If you’re more into the art of planting flowers, then you’re in luck. There are plenty of options to choose from, whether you’re looking for something bold like geraniums, or something bushier, like petunias. These flowers are bright and colorful, and come in plenty of colors – including red and white. Some petunias even show off a red-and-white striped bud.

Another idea is to try planting impatiens in your flower beds. These little beauties are great for filling empty soil spaces and nicely compliment centerpiece flowers. Begonias are equally beautiful, come in red and white, and offer up the same fullness and growth as impatiens. Viney mandevilla comes in a bold red, and also acts as a great addition to your garden space, especially when surrounded by white nasturtiums.

An added bonus? All of these flowers are super easy to grow and available at Urban Roots Garden Market. Whatever flowers you select for your garden, you’re sure to create a gorgeous display that will have everyone feeling proud to be Canadian.

Artsy Arrangements

Something else to consider when using flowers and plants to enhance your Canada Day celebrations is a planter or basket. By choosing flowers that boast of white and red buds, and arranging them in a beautiful planter, you’ll be creating decorations that keep on giving.

To get started, you’ll need to choose the right plants for your baskets and planters. Consider the size of the container, the amount of sunlight it will receive, and the type of soil you have. Then, when choosing your Canada Day flowers, make sure that the varieties you choose will be happy together. If you need any tips or help, just ask the folks at Urban Roots – they’ll point you in the right direction!

Once you’ve selected your plants, it’s time to start arranging them. Think about the overall design of your arrangement, and placing the tallest plants in the centre. Work your way out from there, adding medium-sized plants and then smaller ones. Fill in any gaps with leaves or greenery, and then add a Canada Day flag or two for a final touch.
